Anxiety Therapy

Individual Therapy | In-Person in Asheville and Online in NC, DC, VA, & CO

A note from your brain at 2 a.m.: Anxiety is remarkably creative — it can draft an entire disaster screenplay from one unanswered text. In therapy, we don't dismiss those feelings; we get curious about whether the plot matches what usually happens when you actually try things.

About This Service

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety can look different for different people. For some, it may feel like excessive or uncontrollable worry. For others, it may show up as muscle tension, difficulty relaxing, overthinking, self-doubt, or getting caught in catastrophic thoughts that make it difficult to stay present. In therapy, we'll work together to understand how anxiety shows up in your life, identify the situations that trigger it, and explore what keeps it going.

Rather than assuming what anxiety means for you, we'll start by defining the problem together. We'll explore your thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviors to better understand your experience. From there, we'll identify what you'd rather do more and less of, and develop practical strategies to help you move toward this new response.

Therapy may include learning how anxiety affects the brain and body, reframing unhelpful thought patterns (without relying on forced positivity), gradually facing anxiety-provoking situations, building distress tolerance skills, and practicing new coping strategies. Sessions provide a supportive, non-judgmental space to process challenges, practice skills, and create a plan for applying those skills in everyday life.

The goal of anxiety therapy is not to eliminate anxiety altogether, but to help you respond to it more effectively so that it has less control over your decisions, relationships, and quality of life.

Anxiety concerns I commonly work with

Therapy is tailored to how anxiety shows up for you. Two patterns that often bring people into this work are generalized anxiety and social anxiety.

Generalized Anxiety

Generalized anxiety often means chronic worry that jumps from one concern to the next — work, health, relationships, or the future — along with restlessness, muscle tension, and trouble staying present. Together we can slow the worry cycle, test anxious predictions, and build skills that give you more choice when tension rises.

Social Anxiety

Social anxiety can make conversations, meetings, dating, or everyday public situations feel overwhelming — with anticipatory dread, self-criticism, or avoidance that shrinks your world. Therapy can help you approach feared situations at a workable pace, reduce reliance on safety behaviors, and rebuild confidence without forcing fake confidence.

Taking a Feminist Lens Toward Anxiety

Anxiety doesn't exist in a vacuum. A feminist approach to therapy recognizes that many people experience anxiety not only because of individual thoughts or behaviors, but also because of societal expectations, power dynamics, gender roles, and cultural messages that shape how they move through the world. Together, we'll explore how factors such as people-pleasing, perfectionism, caregiving responsibilities, appearance pressures, workplace inequities, and difficulty setting boundaries may contribute to anxiety. Rather than viewing anxiety as something that is "wrong" with you, we'll work to understand it within the larger context of your experiences while building practical skills to help you feel more empowered, self-trusting, and aligned with your values.
