In the first session, we'll explore the initial concerns leading you to seek therapy, and what would make our time together helpful for you.  We'll explore how your concerns impact your day to day functioning, start identifying potential causes or factors you think are worsening the issues, and assess for risk and safety concerns. I may offer evidence-based information about your mental health concerns or a mindfulness tool to try to increase awareness. We'll discuss how I think I can help, based on your needs and goals for therapy.

The assessment phase may last a few sessions to allow for a thorough exploration of your mental health concerns and to agree on the goals for treatment. Treatment planning occurs over time and is a collaborative process. The treatment plan is based on your specific goals and current "toolkit."

Overtime and together, we'll identify small steps (or smaller goals) you'd like to try to make some progress on those bigger goals. Goals can be specific or more broad/conceptual. Healing does not equal "fixed."

What should I expect from therapy?

We may explore what's taking up your headspace since we last met, or if there's a particular issue you want to work on in the session. I may identify a concept, highlight or tool discussed in the last session and ask for your insights. I may ask about progress made on your initial treatment goals or check in on previously reported concerns. Or, you may choose to start the conversation. Therapy can focus on specific issues or longer term, for chronic conditions or a focus on personal growth.

In between sessions, it is important to spend time reflecting on what we talked about, and to practice integrating new reflections, insight or strategies into your life. Here are some things to expect from therapy:
